Best collectable coin under $100

I have a question for the coin collectors here. I want to give a collectible coin to my daughter.

1.It must be Silver or Gold

2. Must be collectible having Numismatic value

I realize Gold is expensive but not knowing the collecting side of things there may be a super small gold coin out there that fits #1

Please give suggestions with reasons as I don't have a clue.

Thanks

Electric-Amish

How about a 1/10 of an ounce gold panda? Check ebay for them

(or a nice morgan)

Take a look a the Austrailian silver lunar series. These are absolutely gorgous coins. They will never be rare though but due to their beauty they will be very collectible and will always carry a premium to melt.

EA,

Here is my suggestion -

1955 Franklin Half - MS65+ (Bugs Bunny Version)

Here are the reasons -

1) She can start bank prospecting and fill her collection.

2) Or she can buy coins that fill the set at bullion.

3) Showing her how the coin got its name will show how clashes happen.

4) The other coins in the set are affordable.

Best of luck

I tend to look at SAE as bullion - To me the date doesn't matter. I noticed that they produced more 1996 SAE than the 1955 Franklin.

If you like the SAE how about a 1937-D walking liberty half. It has low mintage 1.6M versus the SAE 3.6M. And you should be able to pickup a 37-D in AU for under $100.

How about a coin from your birth date or her grandfathers?

Best of luck

Re: Best collectable coin under $100

I vote for a 1 Oz. 1996 Silver Proof Panda. About that price. Only 8000 of these were minted. Lowest mintage of the series. (KM lists the 1992 P with a lower , but I believe it is an error as most sources have 20,000 pieces minted that year). Beautiful coin and I can't imagine it not going up in value over the years as millions of Chinese enter middle class , and gain access to discretionary money. They already have strong interest in numismatic/philatelic concerns , but not many have the wherewithall to buy Gold and Silver . Imagine in 20 years ,if they continue to progress as they seem to be in China , and just a few million out of 1.5 Billion people (in 20 years , or more perhaps) decied to put together a full set of Silver Proof Pandas (83,84,85,87,89-97) and they all need one of the 8,000 1996 Proofs? Otherwise , you didn't mention how old your daughter is , but girls like Panda bears (or other animals too I guess), and you have the Olympics in Beijing in 08 , which also ties in nicely with the 25th anniversary of the series.

As a numismatist first and PM hoarder second, I would go for any MS65 Walking Liberty. Common dates from 1942 to 1947. Make sure they are graded by PCGS or NGC.

The reason for a walking liberty is it is the basis for the new SAE, at least the obverse or front of the coin. Also, it was a workhorse of the American economy. Remember no more silver dollars were minted after 1935, so it was the 50 cent walking liberty that bore the brunt of our parents and grand parents needs. Much like the $20 FRN today. Because of the use, coins in high quality mint state are more rare than other 50 cent pieces, such as the Franklin from 1947-1963 and the Kennedy 1964. The Walking Liberty is a masterpiece of art and encompasses two world wars, the roaring twenties, and depression eras. So it has an interesting history around it (remember coins are doors to the past).

The coin pictured below has been toned, and many may not like the toning, but I am at work and stealing pics off the net.

"As a numismatist (black sheep of GIM) first and PM hoarder second" :haha: , I would say that any of these suggestions are great........Walking Liberty, Morgans, Pandas too (except there is a flood of fakes which are undermining the Panda market and will make both you, and any buyer down the road, question if what you got are real or not.)

But we know so little about your daughter - her age or interests - and perhaps coins do not interest her........therefore, I would suggest four of the 1 ounce, or two of the 2 ounce Australians Lunar coins.

Why?

Well, first off they are gorgeous - and what woman doesn't like gorgeous?

Secondly, they are around $20 for 1 ounce, $35 for 2 ounce.......so instead of one coin you can give 2 or 3.....or even 4-5 if you go the smaller ones.

They are pure silver, are collectable and will go up in value.

You can give her one that corresponds with her Chinese birth-year sign, to her own sign.

You can add to the collection every birthday or Christmas till she has all 12.

And I have given a few of these out to close friends who are not into coins, and where the majority of the other suggestons are sound - my non-numismatic friends would not respond as well to something like a Morgan or Walking Liberty as they do to the Silver Lunars.........their eyes literally light up when they open them.

Thats my two-cents based on personal experience!

Hope its a great holiday for you both and I am sure, whatever you do, it will be appreciated!

Cheers!

Master Ho brings up a good point about the silver lunars. If your daughter enjoys coins then something numismatic is a good choice like the walking liberty, but if if this is a new experience for her, the lunars would be my choice. Can't go wrong there.

Oh yes, increase the expenditure slightly and give the Lunar set to date.

That would be really impressive. A quarter oz of gold Vs the entire silver lunar series? No contest.

If you got her a 1 or 2 oz. silver Australian lunar or Chinese panda, you could pair it with a 1/10 or 1/20 oz. gold lunar or panda of the same year. If you're trying to interest her in starting a collection, the lunars are more affordable. If you go with those, I'd definitely suggest getting the gift boxes that go with them. The panda coins make a really impressive gift in the wooden gift boxes, and the lunar gift boxes are nice, too, though getting a bit hard to find (I think J&T Coins still has some).

I vote the lunar horse. Is there a girl alive who does not love horses? And that one is beautiful.

If you can stretch it past 100, a set of lunar 1 ozers would be nice.

If not, a matched pair of 2 oz lunar horse and dragon ought to go over well.

I wonder about the capsule. Kids like to get their hands on stuff.

I say....a seated Liberty Half-dollar....You should be able to find a VF or XF for under $100. I just did. At APMEX. The older the better I say. Getting harder and harder to find these coins. That or get her a whole roll of BU Franklins. Franklins have big upside IMHO.

Good point, but a Morgan or Peace in MS65 is more than $100, common date $120 and up depending on where you look. You want to give the girl a pretty coin without wear, right? Don't get me wrong, I love my silver dollars; I could never have enough.

I gave a true numismatist answer, but Master Ho gave a thoughtful answer. I suspect that girl gets a lunar.

To me, it just pops right out like a full moon does on a freezing winter night.

That would be me. I think it was a result of seeing pictures of it first and then the lighting in real life being different enough that it wasn't what I was expecting, which can be disappointing. Maybe the moon should steal the show, but I guess I was just expecting the most prominent thing on a coin named after a timberwolf to be a timberwolf.

I'd suggest the Lunars as well. That picture of the 2007 boar coin is outstanding.

Don't know too much about collectables, but I'd go for older coins if I wanted to spend $100 on a single coin. Not only are they historic, but age in itself will keep them valuable. People like old stuff and understand the older the coin, the more valuable instinctively. This MS70 stuff, I still don't buy. That being said, the Trade Dollar or Seated Half-Dollar look to be what you can get for $100.

The reverse with Trident is well done, but I have always thought the Queen's pic was boring, much like our own Presidents.

How about an uncirculated and professionally graded Morgan silver dollar. The Morgan silver dollar is considered one of the most beautiful and popular coins ever minted and when it comes to collecting silver coins it is not unusual for numismatists to get started with these. Something like this will cost you $50 or less on Ebay:

azxcvbnm321 - This is the first great misnomer in numismatics........age does NOT necessarily assure one of value or price.........in fact, I was just reading that in a book on coins last night - there are lots of older coins going back to ancient Rome that aren't worth as much as some present-day coins. Lots of factors go into why a coin is valuable - scarcity is one of the main ones, not age.

Scott 999 - FLRacinggirl collected these and got me to look into them while we were discussing the Australian Lunars, which we both have a few sets of - but there is a higher premium on these coins than any comparable silver coins we collect - much higher than the Lunars - and while I understand the low mintage, I do not see the demand for this coin to warrant the high premium, tho there MIGHT be in Europe (plus, if TSHTF, most Americans wouldn't know what they were or, perhaps, trust them). Its a lovely coin but I question the collectors value of it if there is no major demand. Not to put words in her mouth, but even she agreed about the very high premium. I think you have some valid points. I don't know what will happen to their value over time. This week was the first one I bought and I thought it was a very nice coin with limited mintages. I also buy lunars and think they are great. I wanted to get the britannia out there as an option. I would urge you to buy just one for your collection if you can. I certainly won't be collecting all the years like the lunars but after I give this one as a gift I will be getting one more for me after seeing the coin in person.

Master_Ho, just because you are of the opinion that a few ounces of foriegn bullion would make for a better gift than a genuine antique U.S. coin minted for circulation is no reason for taking such a condescending tone. While it's true that my initial post in this thread doesn't appear until page 4 it would be incorrect to make the assumption that I haven't been following the thread to this point. There were only a few brief refences made specifically about Morgan dollars and no one mentioned slabbed Morgans. Also, you have been recommending Australian Lunars to the poster, however, the poster's criteria states that the coin should have "numismatic value" and not just value based on it's weight in gold or silver. Based on the criteria posted, and acting under the assumption that this child is a red-blooded American with potential future interest in numismatics, I am recommending a U.S. minted coin that will not only increase in value but will stir the childs mind when she holds a piece of her ancestor's history in her hands. No disrespect intended sir!

I think the a few of new uncirced 06 "W" mint SAEs are the best bang fer your buck right now.

Personally myself, I think they will be going up in value such as the 96' SAEs, if not more.

Actually - that is NOT what I said - what I said was - the Morgans are a great gift IF THE CHILD WAS INTO NUMISMATICS! If NOT, then the lunar set might be better. Thats probably why so many posted about Pandas and Lunars, which I also said would be good.

But we know so little about your daughter - her age or interests - and perhaps coins do not interest her........therefore, I would suggest four of the 1 ounce, or two of the 2 ounce Australians Lunar coins.

Also, you have been recommending Australian Lunars to the poster, however, the poster's criteria states that the coin should have "numismatic value" and not just value based on it's weight in gold or silver.

Which they do. They might be a modern numismatic but that they are which is why people are paying the premium for them.

No disrespect intended sir!

And, as I posted, if they are a red-blooded American with potential future interest in numismatics, I agreed..........

So in post 9 - thats exactly what I said. And The Great Ag in post 18 including the following: Good point, but a Morgan or Peace in MS65 is more than $100, common date $120 and up.

But its over and done now - Dad has made his decision based on his better knowledge of his own child.....so its done..........

Peace...........Happy Holidays!

Electric Amish,

If you've already gotten the coin, I hope she loves it and it inspires her.

I think a good size pile of junk priced merc dimes all different dates, and a merc dime coin folder would end up being fun for a youngster. The merc is no longer minted and would seem unusual. The proper handling of coins could be taught, without much numismatic value at risk. The new collector could search through the coins checking dates and mintmarks, an active participant. And a few nicer grade, less common dates could be mixed in or given seperately.

An additional folder in which holes can be filled by searching pocket change would be a way for her keep collecting when she can't afford to go to the coin shop.

I must agree. Of all the suggestions here, this would be the best. There is no better way to get a child interested in coin collecting than to give him or her a Whitman folder (a Red Book helps too). I started with lincoln cents as did most young numismatists of my generation, but Mercury dimes would be a great choice since they are still fairly inexpensive and considered one of the most atrractive designs of any U.S. coin.

A nice gift woulda been the US Mint's 2006 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle 3 coin set.

The US Mint price was $100

It contains:

1oz proof
1oz uncirculated
1oz reverse proof

Sorry to say that the US Mint is sold out and that the E-Bay price is around $200.

I read something about how collectors are miffed because these items will now be sold individually which goes against expectations ... anybody know about that?

Hey, Anty Ep:

Not sure if I can answer your question exactly, but here goes. I am surmising some people are upset that a first purchaser would break up the set and sell them individually whether graded or not.

To be honest, the only coin, in my opinion, worth having is the reverse proof SAE. The other two, regular mint SAE, and proof SAE are no big deal.

There are numerous proof sets where 1 coin is collectible and the rest trash. For example in 1996 West Point mint produced a dime that was only included in the proof set. All other coins are not worth diddily, at least in today's terms. Why buy a whole set when you want 1 coin?

Hope this helps.

No worries, Anty Ep. Someone will always be lurking to answer numismatic questions.

I suspect their are more numismatists than admit to it.

Here is what I know at this moment - but its only as I understand it - there might be more info coming..........

The mint only sold the coins in the set of three - a lot of people understand that only the reverse proof was special - the other two are readily available ont heir own.......so they took their sets and broke into them - some sold the reverse on its own for a small fortune of a profit.......some held the reverse proof and are selling the other two........

((And I just saw that The Great AG - who knows a lot more about numismatics than I - beat me to the answer here!))

Some of us are still waiting to see if we'll even get a set from the mint! :cryin2:

Good grief! What little girl would want a horse with WINGS?

Actually - that is a sensational idea - regardless of if she is into numismatics or not.........great suggestion!
